Person living with cancer

Soumendranath, India

Mr. Soumendranath Das, a Biology teacher from Tomluk, West Bengal, India shares his courageous journey with lung cancer. His symptoms began in September 2022 after a school trip to Darjeeling, when he developed a persistent cough. Initially treated for a common infection, his condition worsened, leading to a misdiagnosis of tuberculosis. Despite undergoing multiple treatments for TB, his health deteriorated, and he began experiencing fatigue, weight loss, and breathlessness. A CT scan eventually revealed pleural fluid in his lung, which led to further tests confirming Stage 4 Adenocarcinoma Lung Cancer, a form of cancer, especially in non-smokers.

After molecular testing, he was prescribed Lorlatinib, which has improved his condition. However, he faces two major challenges: mental and financial. As a father to two young daughters, his concern for their future weighs heavily on him. The cost of his treatment, about 1.5 lakhs per month, remains a financial burden, despite assistance programs.

Mr. Das emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and urges others to seek medical help for even the smallest symptoms. He expresses gratitude to Lung Connect India Foundation for their support and urges others to stay strong and hopeful. His journey reflects the power of resilience, determination, and the importance of community.
