In 2022, shortly before my 25th birthday, I received a diagnosis of stage II breast cancer.
That day, my excitement from receiving multiple interview invitations from several business schools was immediately overshadowed by this devastating news. Before fully processing the emotional shock, I was admitted to the hospital to start chemotherapy, from which point I also began facing the treatment’s numerous challenging side effects. The loss of my hair, while the least distressing factor, marked the beginning of my profound connection with the Hope Foundation For Cancer Care (HOPE).
Through HOPE’s wig rental service, I connected with a dedicated nurse who supported me throughout my cancer journey during the pandemic. After each chemotherapy session, her phone calls not only helped me monitor my treatment progress but also provided crucial emotional support, rekindling my hope during a very dark time. The warmth I received during this difficult period inspired me to join the foundation after completing my treatment. I was determined to offer the same hope I received to other cancer patients.
After joining HOPE, one day while assisting a fellow cancer patient in selecting and fitting a wig, she burst into tears and said "I've found the courage to continue my treatment." In that moment, I truly understood the profound impact of being part of HOPE.
From a cancer survivor’s perspective, beyond contributing to the organization's development of new services and resources, the most rewarding moments occur when fellow cancer patients express "I hope I can recover just like you!" a powerful testament to how hope can be shared to empower others in their fight against cancer.
