You are not alone
Person living with cancer

Ruth Serem

Eleven years in remission (CA-NPS) and every unique sunset I witness over the Indian Ocean feels like a shared and vibrant celebration of life. This breathtaking view is a testament to God’s grace and the joy of being alive.

There were nights during my treatment in 2014 when I was terrified to close my eyes to sleep, wondering if I’d ever see another sunrise. I’m eternally grateful to my incredible spouse, daughters, mom, dad, brothers, sisters, nanny,  extended family, friends and colleagues whose unwavering support - emotional, spiritual, physical and financial - carried me through.

I wish to posthumously express my deep gratitude to my late oncologist Dr. Opiyo and his late assistant Susan for the invaluable role they played in my healing safari (journey), may God continue to rest their souls in eternal peace. Asante sana (Thank you) to the Nairobi ENT clinic doctors for their accurate diagnosis, the brave team of radiologists at Nairobi Hospital’s Cancer center led by Jonathan who administered the treatment protocol, the nurses in the wards I was admitted to and the amazing inpatient chef who prepared meals tailored to my unique needs at the time.

United by Unique, I recognise and appreciate each cancer survivor’s, patient’s and caregiver’s journey of resilience yet find strength in our shared experience.
Let’s hold on to hope, cherish these beautiful moments and find joy in our victories - big or small. Take heart in the knowledge that even in the darkest storms, the sun will rise again.
Happy World Cancer Day!
