Natasha, South Africa

For as long as I could remember, I had always been drawn to helping others. Just over 2 years ago I joined the Cancer Association of South Africa as a Sustainability Coordinator, a fancy title for a fundraiser.
As I became more involved with the various campaigns and fundraising events, I was exposed to the most remarkable people who had the most inspiring stories as cancer survivors, caregivers, medical professionals, volunteers etc.
As I grow into the role, I see more faces, more stories of struggle, resilience, and, at times, heartache. I was always amazed by the strength of these super humans.
Recently, one of our lead volunteers who is fighting breast cancer for the second time, shared that 'Cancer is just a chapter of her life and not her whole story' I was so moved and this gave me so much perspective.
Over time the impact of my work has became clearer. It is not just about raising money to support the research, education programmes, support programmes and advocacy — it is about creating a community of support.
Being a fundraiser for CANSA has shown me that even the smallest action can spark the change that can ultimately save lives. It has made me proud to be part of an organization that is driven by hope, determination, and a commitment to ensuring one day we will live in a cancer free society.
