Person living with cancer

Michelle, United States

I feel lucky.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer only after advocating for myself when recurring symptoms and my doctor first “thought it was nothing”.  Once the first biopsy came back that “nothing” was actually cancer, I went for a second biopsy and MRI- and then I began my journey through radiation treatment and recovery.
While dealing with the insurance approvals, the insurance company declined the full treatment plan my doctor prescribed, indicating it was  not medically necessary. (And suggested less treatment.). I realize there are protocols, however to be grouped into decision by just a diagnosis code, was frustrating and cold.
Now back to the lucky part.  I went through my treatment and and as of this month, it has been three years that I am now cancer free. I’m thankful every day but never totally at ease that something will occur again. So my story is to always be aware, be strong, and be your own advocate. And…Allow yourself to feel and be vulnerable.  It’s ok.
