I am a cancer survivor, 9 years in remission from a very aggressive Leukemia variant (APL). I am also a daughter to two amazing warriors that put a strong fight, lived each day with purpose and determination until their last breath. I am also a sister to another warrior battling a Stage 4 diagnosis and an inevitable expiration date right now.
I view cancer as a deadly and quiet epidemic. We don't address it directly, or fully, until we are faced with it directly. I also have seen the inequality of care and the difficulty of access to proper care. It is a reality that forces each patient and caregiver to advocate aggressively in order to ensure dignified and quality of care.
Do you feel enabled to lower your cancer risk factors? I feel somewhat enabled by the fact that I have access to preventive care. But many in this great country of ours do not. Waiting months for a possible appointment with a qualified medical professional worries me. So there are ways you can control to lower your risk, but you have to be determined.
What type of support would you appreciate to live a healthier live? Information that I can trust, open access to care and support organizations. Guidelines to both patients and caregivers that are clear, specific and effective.
I have hope, always. But action is required. Join the cause!
