You are not alone
Person living with cancer

Freda, South Africa

I never imagined a cancer diagnosis would transform my life so profoundly. Yet, it has. It's shifted my perspective, teaching me to cherish each day.

As a 16-year Colorectal Cancer Survivor, I've learned to take life one day at a time. A motivational message I received after diagnosis resonated deeply: "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it." These words became my guiding principle.

My journey began on November 26, 2008, just after my 34th birthday. Unrelated symptoms led to a diagnosis of colorectal cancer after a routine procedure revealed polyps on my colon. A biopsy confirmed the worst: cancer.

Surgeons removed the growth, and I woke up with a stoma bag. My world was turned upside down. The following months in hospital were a blur as I navigated the challenges of my new reality.

Fortunately, the stoma bag was not permanent. I'm grateful my illness led to the discovery of the growth. Regular check-ups became crucial, leading to more surgeries, hospital stays, and check-ups. I also underwent chemotherapy, fortunate to have a relatively mild reaction.

Without medical aid, navigating the public healthcare system presented numerous challenges. Sharing my experience with others proved daunting. I struggled to put into words what I was going through, and constant questions from loved ones left me feeling overwhelmed.

But I wasn't alone. My family, friends, and coworkers provided unwavering support, turning a potentially isolating experience into a journey of hope and resilience.

After diagnosis, I felt lost. But attending a CANSA Relay For Life Survivor's function was a turning point. I met others who understood my journey and discovered CANSA's invaluable resources.

Inspired, I joined CANSA as a volunteer in 2017, driven by a passion to raise awareness. In 2020/2021, I was honored to be selected as a Global Hero of Hope.

This recognition fuels my commitment to supporting others affected by cancer. I volunteer because I've witnessed the lack of awareness about CANSA's services. Cancer's impact extends far beyond the individual.

That's why I'm dedicated to spreading the word about CANSA's comprehensive support for survivors, caregivers, family, and friends.
