My story is not just about the fight against cancer or my disability; it’s about finding the will to keep going when the odds were against me. I never imagined I would face two life-altering challenges at once, being diagnosed with breast cancer while living with paralysis. It felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
In 2021, I discovered a lump in my breast while changing my clothes. Concerned, I consulted my company doctor who recommended me to seek medical consultation at Baheya Hospitals and Centers. Upon arrival, I underwent a series of examinations, and a biopsy was performed due to a suspected abnormality. The results confirmed a malignant tumor in my left breast which had spread to the axillary lymph nodes. This was a devastating diagnosis, made worse by my existing condition of polio and an old leg fracture that had left me completely immobile.
During this difficult period, I received unwavering support from psychological support team member who helped me understand my condition and prepare for what lay ahead. While I was initially overwhelmed by the shock, their support made a significant difference. Throughout my treatment, members of the patient navigation team have always offered to assist me with mobility using the wheelchair, but I refused as I had always been independent. However, their support made me feel less lonely.
My treatment plan involved eight chemo sessions, which proved to be extremely challenging due to my limited mobility and the fact that I live alone. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete the full course of chemo due to respiratory complications and a weakened heart.
The MDT explained that I have two surgical options: a lumpectomy, which would have been significantly challenging due to medical complexities, or a mastectomy. After discussing the situation with my doctor, considering my unmarried status and overall health, they decided to go for the challenging option and proceed with a lumpectomy and the surgical team at Baheya successfully performed the surgery. Of course, this had a positive impact on my mental state and made me feel at ease.
Following surgery, I underwent radiotherapy and am currently undergoing hormonal treatment.
My journey isn’t over yet, but I face the future with renewed hope and a deeper appreciation for life. It taught me that nothing is more precious than one's health.
