Dr. Mahmoud, Egypt

Early in my career, I observed the profound psychological impact of the decision to undergo a mastectomy, particularly for younger women. It wasn't merely the anxiety and stress stemming from the tumor itself, but also the uncertain journey of treatment that added to their burdens. This motivated me to pursue a PhD in breast reconstruction following total mastectomy, during which I performed over 600 breast reconstruction surgeries for breast cancer patients.

I’m Dr. Mahmoud Hassan, a consultant and lecturer in surgical oncology at Cairo University and I work at Baheya Hospitals and Centers.

It was essential to provide patients with the necessary psychological support and avoid adding further burdens to those already coping with the weight of their illness. I found that reassuring a patient newly diagnosed with breast cancer was the most challenging part of care.

One of the most rewarding experiences I've had was playing a part, however small, in supporting these patients both psychologically and surgically. On one occasion, I was informing a patient about the decision to proceed with a total mastectomy and reconstruction when I was surprised by her calm acceptance of this difficult decision. The support this time didn't come from me, but rather from the patient's sisters, who surprised me by revealing that they had undergone the same procedure previously with me. Their third sister also accompanied them to follow-up appointments. During one visit, I encouraged them to inform their first-degree female relatives about the importance of regular check-ups. Subsequently, their sister came for an examination, which revealed a cancerous tumor. All three sisters then underwent mastectomy and breast reconstruction.

This was one of many proud moments I experienced at Baheya.
