Amira, Egypt
For a long time, I had been experiencing benign tumors and had undergone several surgeries to remove them. Consequently, when I detected a lump in my breast, I wasn't overly alarmed and sought medical attention at the Military Hospital in my native country, Sudan.
The physician recommended surgical removal of the tumor and conducting a biopsy. Moments before the surgery, I was overcome by a severe panic attack, prompting me to decline the surgery and return home immediately.
While at home, I was watching television when I saw an advertisement for Baheya Foundation. I then made the decision to travel to Egypt to schedule an appointment, given its specialization in breast cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, all appointments were fully booked, so I reserved one four months later and returned to Sudan.
Upon my return for the scheduled appointment, I underwent all the necessary medical examinations. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
I was deeply shocked by the news. However, I met a volunteer from the Baheya’s psychological support team who provided me with immense comfort and reassurance. She discussed with me everything that lay ahead, helping me to calm down and feel less alone during my journey.
In a surprising turn of events, during my treatment in Egypt, I met and married an Egyptian man who became my support system throughout my medical journey. My treatment plan began with chemo, which was extremely exhausting, but my husband was always there to assist me in every way possible.
I then underwent a total mastectomy followed by radiotherapy and currently, I am undergoing hormonal treatment.
Now that my treatment is complete, I strongly encourage all women to prioritize regular check-ups. Early detection is crucial, as delaying treatment can significantly worsen the condition and reduce the likelihood of recovery.
